When investigating criminal defense cases, Management Resources’ Investigators are independent and confidential fact finders. Their goal is to uncover what actually happened and seek truthful information. The truth may not always be the outcome a particular client may be seeking, however it is always better to uncover the truth because the opposing side may know it and use it against you.
While an investigation is in progress, all information gathered is reviewed confidentially and shared only with attorneys and those involved in the case. An ethical private investigator does not disclose what may, or may not, have been found while assembling the data surrounding the case.
While investigating the wrongful conviction of Jonathan Fleming it was clear that this case would make headlines, and it did, with news coverage spanning around the world. But, before his exoneration not many people knew Fleming’s name, nor what was going on in his case.
As we were able to unearth glaring evidence of his wrongful conviction which led to his being set free, we saw the opportunity to use this as a landmark case with which to educate others.
“When the investigation ends, advocacy and education can begin.” -Kim Anklin
When a case is concluded, and the prosecutorial mistakes are finally made public, private investigators have an opportunity to advocate on behalf of the client’s needs and educate others about the issue(s) represented in their case. There is an obligation to bring to light issues such as hiding exculpatory evidence which, had the defense known about it, would have changed the jury’s minds and therefore the verdict. We feel it’s our duty to try to effect change within a system that is unmistakably broken.
By creating dialog and speaking out we are able to communicate to audiences the impact these cases have for clients, their families, and especially for victims who never had justice. Reaching out to college and university students, and speaking directly to them, is one way to give them a first hand account of what they will encounter if they choose to work within the legal system. They are the hope of a future for those who will seek their help as professionals.
Whether a criminal, corporate or civil investigation, there is always something to be learned. For those who have traveled the long path of seeking justice and have prevailed, their experiences shed new light into the pitfalls of our present day legal system. To bring awareness to the public and promote change is a way to improve the chances of not being discriminated against, wrongfully terminated, wrongfully convicted, or worse, wrongfully executed.
