A recent article by Keith Owens in Pursuit Magazine includes the Dictionary.Com definition of “investigating” as
1. to examine, study, or inquire into systematically; search or examine into the particulars of; examine in detail.
2. to search out and examine the particulars of in an attempt to learn the facts about something hidden, unique, or complex, especially in an attempt to find a motive, cause, or culprit.
Examining original evidence is one of the key aspects to a systematic investigation. Evidence is scrutinized with new eyes when hired to conduct a criminal investigation and must be handled with professionalism and care.
Searching through existing evidence will occasionally lead to other indicators in a complex investigation. Oftentimes critical details are overlooked, or simply not explained correctly, and the significance can be a pivotal turning point for the case.
Investigate with Integrity
A private investigator’s background is crucial to conducting a professional investigation. Training and experience in law enforcement helps when coordinating with current officers assigned to a case, as an investigator will have developed similar skills, along with a keen intuition which often leads to uncovering clues.
One of the concerns of experienced investigators is the flood of unethical investigators who work cheaply, sometimes illegally, and give the profession a bad name. Integrity of the investigation must be held in the highest regard when pursuing justice. Those who hold themselves to a higher standard will have the respect of their peers, their clients, and the industry.
The devil is in the details and holds true as a benchmark of a successfully defined investigation.
