We hear a lot lately about the “graying of America” as baby boomers move into the role of the elderly population, and with that the increase in elder abuse as older people become more frail, physically and mentally.
Do you have an elderly family member who requires a caregiver?
Between one and two million Americans aged 65 or older have been injured, exploited, or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depended for care or protection.
Unfortunately at Management Resources we are seeing a growing trend in these types of cases, and have been contracted to investigate allegations of elder abuse.
Forms of Elder Abuse
Elder Abuse comes in the form of physical, sexual, neglect, health care fraud and financial abuse. We have seen physical abuse escalate to the point where the patient dies at the hands of their caregiver or due to negligence on the part of the facility where the patient resides.
There are many signs and symptoms of elder abuse which every care giver or family member should become aware of and if you recognize the signs, an intervention should be in order.
The prevention of elder abuse is simple:
- Listen to seniors and their caregivers
- Intervene when you suspect elder abuse
- Educate others about how to recognize and report elder abuse
What to do if you suspect Elder Abuse
Reporting and intervention are key to the well being of the elderly. If you suspect you are being abused, or you are aware of someone being abused in one of the ways described above, don’t hesitate to report to Adult Protective Services. Many abuse victims are hesitant to report out of fear and shame. Thoroughly document the abuse for any future possibility of prosecution.
